3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
there are so many versions of the 1st pirate ship - the 3550 - i decided to start with the German ones.
do you think this list is complete and right?
i have doubts about some info that i leave out - like the cannon balls material and color, possible variations on the actual color of the sails (some seem so white in the boxes pictures), "hook" shape underneath the bowsprit, ...
what i have as a starting point (before going to other countries) is this:

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
Hi Cachalote,
I would make a difference between Versions as mentioned in the Collector and the special editions (Exclusives).
Unfortunately you have no pictures of the orriginal (and i do not have them complete). But i will give a listing as i see it with dates from the collector (although one could argue about those dates) and my remarks.
3550 V1 1978 - 1982/83
3550 Exclusive 1979
This was also sold abroad as there is metioning of this version in a 1979-80 Playpeople catalog. I have no info for which toyseller this was an exclusive in Germany.
(Buffalo Bill found another version of this box (prob. 1979-1980) without the small picture of the boat and small picture of its crew (5 figures) on the top left corner of the front, according to milagro8 this box has dutch tekst on the cover and was a dutch exclusive for Vendex)
3550 V2 1982/83 - 1984/85
3550 Exlusive 1982/83
This version puzzles me the most as it has a strange content and here i also have no info where it was sold. It could easily be a foreign exclusive edition too.
To give a version to the post 1984 editions proves a difficulty as with all post 1984 playmobil boxes. Probably every year this 3550 was produced every single production series could have a different box (sometimes small details).
(here i will use some rip-off pictures from the WWW)
3550 V3 1984/85 - 1988-89
Edition with no number: Edition with outline number but no content descriptions in different languages: Edition with outline number with 5 content descriptions
3550 V4 1988/89 - 1990/91
Blackline version:
Could there also be a Blackline-o version?
Any additional Info would be welcome,
Playmorache

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
Addition:
For exact dating of the versions we would need more open boxes of the same versions with orriginal flyers, control leaflets and figures to check. Best unused or MIB version, but who will tear open his MISB 3550?
I got hold on this 3550 1982-83 MIB (but fortunately not sealed) exclusive and found a different crew in the content:
Different colors and pre 1982 as well as post 1983 features on the figures. Fixed hands as well as turnable hands, dotted numbered Bottoms as well as squar numbered Bottoms.
Slightly different accessories .
It includes the rare red necklace.
1982-2 Flyer, which would mean the box would be in the shops late 1982 beginning 1983.
Regards,
Playmorache

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
thank you playmorache.
as always 1 problem turns into so many more.
after some thought this is what i think.
"my" klickipedia numbering is not good.
it lacks 2 or 3 versions and, even if i could add these, they would be difficult to date.
and, worst than this, if new box versions appear, thay would have no place except by adding letters (4-c, 4-d...).
not a good method.
collector 3 numbering is not good.
like mine, it's based in a limited number of versions and can't expand.
like mine, new versions are difficult to date.
i guess axel worked (and what a marvelous work he did) with the information he had at the time.
id he intends to introduce so many "tiny" versions like we tried here, for all playmo sets, he will go crazy.
catalogues don't help much.
the only one who has a box picture is the 1979-80 one.
we can see the change in the crew's hands before 1984 and after but nothing more.
in here there's a correction - in the first moving hands, all of them seem to be light pink.
and another one - all 3550 versions seem to have a´the same kind of "horizontal stick" underneathe the bowsprit.
official site only creates 2 versions, A (1978) and B (1984).
but maybe this is the best way to go.
i can leave only 2 versions.
V1, 1978-1983
fixed hands, crane holding a yellow trunk, 4 box variations.
V2, 1984-1990
moving hands, crane holding a brown trunk, 4 box variations.
the mention to these variations within each version i will include in a wiki article, together with pictures.
i see no better way for the time being (although i am sure shaper versions will pose a problem).
what do you all think?

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
Hi Cachalote,
I would still stick to the collector,
give -a,-b to packaging variants and put the exclusive in another catagorie.
As i do not think there is a candidate to follow up the work of Axel,
which would be a lot of work, the collector still is the best basis we have.
Regards,
Bert

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
well, i don't know...
the late 70's early / 80's seem to have been a time of astonishing growth for playmobil.
releasing a pirate ship as complex as the 3550 shows they were confident in themselves.
i guess the success was enormous and the production had to be reinforced many times.
each one of them could be a good excuse to try new packaging design.
the playmo-look is not yet well established.
you can see foreign sister-companies releasing similar sets with nicer box designs - the early scaper deluxe sets (amongst them there is even the possibility of a 3550); the playpeople line, etc..
so, new boxes every year would be a natural thing.
the novelties with the 3550 concentrate on the front - tha back, even in tje later versions, still shows the same images and contents.
is this such an important thing that we should give every box a different V...?
i have my doubts.
axel's incredible work, although called the "bible" so many times, should not be viewed as a dogmatic compendium.
i bet that he has the same opinion.
what would he do if he had to deal with so many sets?
i don't know.
for the time being i will not ask yoyei to change the 3550 organization on klickypedia.
but i have a feeling i will...

Hi,
I have the feeling that you are not aware of the fact that Axel passed away in october 2013, because you write about him in the present tense.

A picture of the 1979 exclusive 3550 was also used in toy catalogs.

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
that is strange.
the skull and bones flag is black instead of red in this picture.
like the one who is used in the spanish 3550 versions.
the boat is facing right instead of left (actually the entire image is symmetrical).
is this a playmobil catalogue?

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
A bit late,
It does look like the spanisch Famobil variant flag, but it could also just be the old 1979 pic with the flag colored, in the advertising of Milagro8.
But the add must be at least from 1986 because of the 3546 v4 box.

Es sieht danach aus das die exklusiv version von den 3550 aus 1979 einen Kaufhof Galeria exklusiv Set war. Hier das Display dazu:

Re: 3550 GERMAN versions need confirmation
in klickypedia i decided to organize the 3550 using my scheme - 2 versions, several variations.
i explained it in http://www.klickypedia.com/wiki/3550-pi ... ariations/ and in http://www.klickypedia.com/wiki/3550-pi ... varitions/.
going back to those threads i still thing it's the best way to go.
thank you all for all the info and help.
